How Eric Taylor Revolutionized the Salon Industry with Salon Republic

In the latest episode of Stylist Soul Tribe Conversations, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Eric Taylor, the founder and CEO of Salon Republic and host of The Hair Game podcast. Eric has a unique story that highlights both creativity and entrepreneurship, making him one of the most influential voices in the beauty industry today.

From Economics to Salons: Eric’s Unlikely Path

Eric’s journey began in an unexpected place—studying economics in college during the late 1990s. While many of his peers were heading into the high-paced world of tech startups, Eric had a different vision for his life. Influenced by his creative mother, a successful oil painter, and his entrepreneurial father, a real estate business owner, Eric knew he wanted to create something of his own.

However, it wasn’t until a conversation with his barber that he discovered his passion for the beauty industry. Fascinated by the artistry of hairstylists and the business opportunities within salons, Eric decided to explore this path further.

The Birth of Salon Republic

Eric’s vision began to take shape when he encountered the salon studio model in Dallas, Texas—one of the first of its kind in the country. This innovative concept provided beauty professionals with independent spaces to run their businesses, offering both flexibility and freedom. Inspired, Eric began working under the salon studio’s founder for free, learning everything he could about salon management and operations.

After gaining hands-on experience, Eric moved to California and opened the first Salon Republic location in Studio City, Los Angeles, in 2000. His goal was to create an environment where beauty professionals could thrive, combining their creativity with the business structure needed to succeed.

Balancing Creativity and Practicality in Business

One of the key themes Eric discussed in our conversation was the balance between creativity and practicality. Drawing from his mother’s experience as a professional artist, he emphasized that success often comes from understanding what clients want and aligning that with your creative vision.

In the beauty industry, this means that hairstylists and salon owners must deliver a service that meets both their creative ambitions and the practical needs of their clients. Eric’s ability to bridge this gap has been critical to the success of Salon Republic, which now has over 27 locations.

The Challenges of Building a Business

Like any entrepreneur, Eric faced numerous challenges along the way. He shared stories of difficult lease negotiations, construction delays, and the long hours required to get his first salon off the ground. In the early days, Eric worked 80-hour weeks, handling everything from cleaning bathrooms to managing floor plans. This hands-on approach gave him a deep understanding of what it takes to run a successful salon business.

Despite the obstacles, Eric’s persistence and focus on creating a thriving community for beauty professionals have paid off. Many of the original hairstylists he rented to 24 years ago are still with Salon Republic today.

The Power of Connection: The Hair Game Podcast

In addition to running Salon Republic, Eric hosts The Hair Game podcast, where he interviews beauty professionals, educators, and industry leaders. Since its launch in 2017, the podcast has become a valuable resource for anyone in the beauty industry, offering insights into trends, business strategies, and personal stories from top stylists.

Eric credits the podcast with keeping him connected to the needs and challenges of beauty professionals. Through these conversations, he gains valuable feedback and remains informed about the latest developments in the industry.
